Reading is Changing Again - What Will You Keep on Your Bookshelf?
This month brought up the latest accelerations of AI and the questions of what that means for reading. Will "reading" go away in the face of AI Agents?
If you need some grounding in the midst of some of these existential moments that the #AIinEducation and #AI in life revolution has brought, let me recommend a few books that will ground you in the human part of the human experience:
📕Grumpy Monkey (Suzanne Lang) : https://amzn.to/3VIxjKu (a great book for young children to invite the conversation around confusing and powerful feelings that we don't always understand - a good one for this time of year). Reading with a child or to a child is shown to be beneficial well beyond the years you imagine. Finding the right stories and board book
📘The Beautiful Book of Questions (Warren Berger): https://amzn.to/41DiVah (this one is just an invitation to reflect, push and capture - use it on your own to capture learnings and insights about yourself from 2024 or as a conversation starter around the holiday dinner tables)
📗The Let Them Theory (Mel Robbins) https://amzn.to/4flv3Qz - This one is great for leaders. It's new too, so a great gift to yourself at year end. A way to both take bold action and release responsibility for things outside your control (and Mel Robbins' work is backed by research, so always a good read).
📙ADHD 2.0 (Edward Hallowell M.D. & John Ratey M.D.) https://amzn.to/3DkPb83 - With 7 million children under 18 with a diagnosis of ADHD and estimated 15.5 million adults, building a shared understanding of what it is to navigate the world and how to make our homes, relationships and workplaces more neuroinclusive is a great step to take in 2025. This is a well-written, quick read. Might even fold up into a stocking?
📘Extraordinary Things To Cut Out and Collage (Maria Rivian) https://amzn.to/3ZVNhDD. This one is on my list after eyeing it multiple times at the local bookstore. If you feel the need to get messy and create, collage is an excellent medium for beginners and more expert alike.
🎨50 Ways to Draw Your Beautiful Ordinary Life: Practical Lessons in Pencil and Paper Flow (Irene Smit) https://amzn.to/4gOydgN This is such a great book and guide to building an art practice into your day-to-day without a huge lift. Whether for yourself, a loved one, or someone on your team - this is a book to invite an art practice right around you.
Invest in parts of your list and follow one of the many pieces of advice about how to build this into a daily ritual. It can be moments in the morning, midday or as a transition into your evening. Just 10 minutes of practice will yield results all around.
